Purgation Therapy (Virechana)

Purgation or virechana is the second-step in the five-part panchakarma therapy. In this step, the small intestine is cleansed of accumulated toxins through the use of mild herbal laxatives.

Essential oils are not used as part of the laxative, and the specific mixture of herbal oils depends on your body type (prakrti). A common combination is castor oil and aloe, often with senna, rhubarb, or gentian added.

Purgation takes place over two days, after which you move on to the sweat therapy.
